Let's Hear it for the Hooch!

We've already spent a couple of Saturdays this summer playing way down yonder on the Chattahoochee or "The Hooch" as we refer to it. We've gone swimming and some have jumped off cliffs, and we went tubing a couple weekends ago! Boy it was COLD, but SO fun! Here's some picts! (We've got Andrea, Ashley, Clint, Michael and Lori, Stephanie and me and Ryan. Jennifer was with us too- but I don't think any of the pictures show her.) ****UPDATE! It seems we have a problem! Read here! Funny thing, that's where we went tubing and swimming!****

Go Ryan!
Andrea and Ashley
Ashley wasn't exactly happy about these ADORABLE little baby ducks that decided to hang out with us for a while. They were literally that close for about ten minutes- even with their mom standing by watching!
Poor Clint was doing his best to stay out of the FREEZING water!

Our butts were pretty much numb by the time we got out!
Isn't he so hot? RAR!

Happy Blog Anniversary!

So, this month I'm celebrating being a blogger for two years. I haven't been on this site the whole time, but I started out here.
It's pretty exciting, because like many of you- it's sort of become a journal for me. I've been able to copy and paste some of the entries I made into a word document for me to put in my journal- which is so much better than hand writing it! Especially since I never kept up with my real journal for those few months. Anyway... I'll stop going on, but I hope that I can keep this up too! It's actually a fun outlet for me, so I think I will! Cheers!

Story Time!

So a lot of people have wondered how I got to Atlanta. It's a good question really. I'll explain a somewhat short (okay not really) version of it and then tell you why I've come to really love it here.
I'd been living in Orem, UT in the same house as Elder Bruce Hafen. We called it "The FOF" (Fortress of Femininity) and I lived with great girls and in a good ward. Had a good job and a WONDERFUL, AWESOME group of friends to play with and hang out with constantly. But after living in Utah for 7 years and feeling sort of "stagnant", I had started to think it was time for a change. San Diego sounded good because I really like it there- but was too expensive. I like Portland, OR but couldn't find any good job opportunities up there. I'd kind of given up on the idea of going anywhere, but prayed that if it was the right thing to do- that a new opportunity would find me. As much as I loved UT and the fact that I lived so close to practically all my family, I was starting to miss living in a diverse culture and feeling the need to be in new places and to see new things.
And then my sister Delinda graduated ASU with her Master's degree in Art History. She decided after her graduation (or maybe it was before...) that she wanted to go on and pursue her PhD. I'm not sure how many schools she looked at but two she mentioned were in Chicago and here in Atlanta. So being that she'd have to go far away and all alone, and knowing my feelings of where I was presently in my life- she asked if I'd want to move with her to wherever she went and be her roommate. This sparked my thoughts and I told her it depended on where she went and that I'd pray/think about it.
She visited both places and as she got a little more excited about living in Chicago but I didn't really feel so good about moving there. She found out though that she was excepted to Emory University in their Art History program here in Atlanta, which is an EXCELLENT school. I prayed about it and I felt like it was the right thing to do, but I didn't know why. I had no job here, no friends, and had only been here once in my whole life- and for a matter of hours really. I felt though, that even though I didn't REALLY know why I was supposed to come- that it might be possible that I would find my husband here and also have plenty of missionary opportunities. (Funny how things work out!)
So my roommate Emily graciously accepted the invitation to drive across the country with me and she and I packed up my little Neon and headed on our 3 day adventure!
We got here August 6th, 2004 unharmed, safe and with some fun memories behind our belt and that's when life in the ATL or "Hotlanta" started!
I wont lie- it was VERY difficult for me for about the first year and a half after moving here. For someone who has had friends around me for most of my life, I really didn't have any for that first little while. Well, of course I had DJ- but she was also very busy with school. I learned a lot about myself though, and learned that I had to work to have friends and needed to build some self confidence. I finally found my niche though- and started to fit in better and started to make awesome friends both at church and at work. I was even able to be so privileged and blessed to see and participate in a good friend of mine, Megan, receiving the discussions from the missionaries and who would eventually join the Church!
So anyway, here are some of the reasons why I love it here:
  • I love how green it is here. Even in the winter it still shows greenery, and it makes the winter months bearable. And there's no snow, which sometimes I miss, but I get enough of it when I go home for the holidays! There is ice here though, and that can be just as bad.
  • I love how laid back people seem to be here. And for the most part non-judgemental.
  • I love being so close to water in general. I love to play and fish at the Chattahoochee, and I love that we are only about a 5-6 hour drive away from the beach either on the Gulf Coast or the Atlantic.
  • Speaking of being close, I love that we are 2-3 hours from several different states. NC, SC, AL, TN, FL... it's so fun!
  • I love our home, and that we feel away from the city but can drive a short 20-25 minutes to get there if we want to.
  • There are so many activities and things to do here and so much to see, whether it be outdoors in the wilderness or museums or the aquarium or parks.
  • The people are genuine and I love the diversity of religions, race and scenery.
  • The tall buildings were (and still are) a bit intimidating, but they're quite impressive to look at and be beneath. (Not as impressive as the tall mountains of course... well, in my humble opinion anyway!)
  • Lightening Bugs... or Fire Flies! Holy coolness Batman! I'm so glad my kids get to grow up with those... I always wanted to!
  • I have been able to participate in missionary work, meet good friends, have had great new experiences, I became so much closer to my sister, and best of all- got to meet my husband!

There are quite a few other reasons, which I'm sure you'll realize as you continue to read my blog- but I am so glad that I got that special prompting to move here. All of the things I really felt would happen, did and with a bang too! I mean, I even got to participate in the conversion of my own husband! What a combo! And I'm so glad I got to move here with my sister who I lived with for two years, even though she left me for another state to live in (she moved back to Arizona). We had lots of fun with each other and I think we both went through some pretty big life changing experiences, although completely different from each other. I'm SO glad that we had each other through it all. And she still has a room at our house! Love you Deej!

I love my husband!! A lot. I don't know that he'll ever know how much I love him. That's all I wanted to say... just felt overwhelmed with it all just now. He's the best.

Memorial Day Weekend in Destin, FL

Wow, Ryan and I had fun! That was a much needed trip! It was a good ol' time with our friends (Ashley, Andrea, Clint, Jennifer, Michael and Lori, Janessa and Stephanie) on a beautiful beach and perfect weather, and most of all being with each other. It was a long drive there and back because on the way there were super excited and on the way back we didn't want to come home... But it was worth it. The water was SO beautiful; perfect temperature, it was CLEAR and crystal blue and nothing but some harmless kelp floating around. The waves were a little crazy at times with a red flag warning most of the time- we only had a yellow flag once, and we pretty much missed out on that one because we were busy doing other stuff.

  • drove about 6-7 hours and got to Destin late Friday and walked down to the beach with everyone for a bit before going to bed. Ryan and Ashley had a small "dance off".

  • woke up early, ate breakfast, got our suits on and headed down to the water (literally across the street from the condo we rented!). Played in the water for a few hours and then afterwards went up to the pool at the condo and swam there for a little. Got lunch at Wendy's and went to the store for some stuff. And then went back to the beach for a couple more hours.

  • for dinner, all of us went to Osaka Hibachi Grill for some good food and entertainment... although, I don't know that I would ever spend that much money there again! We'll see though, peer pressure is hard to resist!

  • woke up later the next morning, sunburned and tired still- and walked two miles to rent scooters to drive around on for a couple hours (the walking was not my favorite part of the trip. SUPER hot with a sun burn- bad combo). The rental guy was NOT nice to my Jennifer though and that made me way sad. We didn't know just how mean he was though until after we had ours. :( Frowny face...

  • after scooters, we went back down to the beach for a bit. And then back to the pool to get some good water time with out getting thrashed by the crazy waves!

  • then we all made yummy Sunday dinner and had Margaritas and Martini's (of course with TONS of alcohol in them...NOT!), it was lots of fun!

  • Ryan and I took a walk together on the beach to look at the moon and the stars- it was so peaceful and sweet to be with my love! And to be alone... even though we love being with our friends.
  • Monday (Happy Birthday Ashley!) we got up and after cleaning up the condo to check out, 6 of us went to rent jet ski's and rode on wave runners for a couple hours in the Destin Harbour. It was a BLAST! Ryan said he had the most fun then, just laughing and going over huge waves and jumping really high! It was so gorgeous out there!
  • (Unfortunately we don't any action photos, but this one will have to do... of course, this is not us- but I'm sure we looked that cool! The water was that pretty!)

  • sadly- our trip had to come to an end after that... we doddled around for a little bit at some of the beach stores and then headed home. It was sad to leave, but good to know we were going back to our home and our comfy bed!

It was so much fun that hopefully we can go again this Fall and enjoy ourselves all over again! Here are some more Pictures!

I'm bored... are you?

this is entertaining... Ahoy, take a stab at it! Ye'll ne'er get me buried booty!

Your pirate name is:
Dirty Ethel Bonney

You're the pirate everyone else wants to throw in the ocean -- not to get rid of you, you understand; just to get rid of the smell. You can be a little bit unpredictable, but a pirate's life is far from full of certainties, so that fits in pretty well. Arr!

Hooray for a 3 day weekend...

Last week went by slow... and I had a feeling this week would too, and it has. And it's because I'm ULTRA excited to go to Destin, FL for the weekend. See that beach? See that spot of white sand? I will be sitting on that and basking in the sun in 48 hours from now...

Someday I plan to have a baby, and when I do... I want this for it to wear.
Reminiscent of Seinfeld...

AKUS and the Fabulous Fox Theatre

We (me, Ryan, Ashley and Clint) went and saw Alison Krauss and the Union Station featuring Tony Rice at the historic and awesome Fox Theatre last night. This is my third time seeing them, but this time was my least favorite. I still love her and loved to hear them play and see all their talent. BUT, I could have done with out the Tony Rice part of it all. And we also had crappy concert neighbors (see story here)- and that always bites. But really, it was fun though, it wasn't a complete disappointment- well not to me anyway. And I do always love to go to the Fox Theatre, it's really an amazing place. I took some pictures for you to see, if you're interested in the history click on the link.
Here's some photos and video. I still remain an avid fan, don't you worry.

28 Years Old With a Size 2 1/2 Shoe...

*

I am a 28 year old woman and I wear a size 2 1/2 in girls, not women's, GIRLS. A common comment people say to me (which people inevitably comment on how small my feet are) is "I wish my feet were that small...". No, you really DON'T wish your feet were this small if they're not already. If they are, you feel my pain don't you? I mean, for Pete's sake! Some of my nieces and nephews have bigger feet than I do! This is not to complain however. And although I get frustrated at times- I've come to terms with my feet and how small they are.

Common Comment #2: "I bet you can find some really cute shoes", well what does "cute" mean anyway? Cute as in being able to get tennis shoes with Princess Belle on them that flash a red or pink light every time I take a step? Or cute as in a crappy pair of fashionable (I use that word loosely) "high heel" shoes with Barbie on them? No... it's very difficult to find cute shoes by my standards. Now sometimes, I can get away with wearing a size 3 or 5. Because (here's a little background for you...) a size 3 in girls is the same size as 5 in women's. And a size 4 in girls is the same as a 6 in women's. So I can sometimes wear a 5, but not a 4... strange eh? It has become something I've struggled with the older I get. It's always been a struggle; I mean, I remember being a kid and all of my neighborhood girl friends wearing a size 12 or a 1 when I was still wearing like a 10 or maybe even smaller. It was really sad to me that my shoes weren't as cool as theirs. And now that I'm older, I still feel the same way!
Common Comment #3: "Well, at least your shoes are cheap!" If by "cheap" you mean pieces of crap for shoes, then yes. There are high quality kids shoes but they are hard to find, and if you do- the cost is just the same as a pair of adult shoes.
For me, it IS hard to find cute shoes. And not only that, QUALITY shoes. DSW wont work, they don't go smaller than a 5 1/2 usually, and if they do- it's only a 5, and like I said before those only fit sometimes. Wal-Mart will occasionally have something decent, but is usually crap and falls apart in no time. Target is getting better, and sometimes I can wear the cute 5's and get them on clearance (like I did today)- but most of the time my selection is limited to sparkly bows or glitter or Hello Kitty emblems which are all a tad bit too young for a 28 year old woman. I have skowered the Internet with sights that sell cute grownup shoes (in a size 2 or 3) and have been lucky enough to find a couple of good ones; Zappos.com and Shoes.com. However, they are still "kids" shoes and still have the issue of not looking very adult like some of the time. I do my best though, I try hard to stay away from the Velcro.
Also, the other issue I have with having such small feet is that they are not fully equipped to support a body like mine. Not only am I vertically challenged, I am horizontally challenged as well. My feet hate me right now, especially when I walk a lot. An issue that my husband and I are doing our best to tackle by exercising! But needless to say, these little feet weren't meant for a grownup body.
My mom gave some hope though, as well as my sister in-law Sam who both had small feet (not as small as mine) pre having babies. So... maybe someday, after having a couple kids- I might be able to wear those 3's and 5's with pride. Boy, wont that be the day! Baby bearing here I come!
Hopefully our kids have a chance for normal sized feet. Ryan can wear up to a 13... so either their feet will be an average size or our boys will have small feet and our girls will have large ones!

Regardless- It's okay if you want to say to me that my feet are cute or state the obvious of "Oh my goodness! You have such small feet!" as if I didn't already know that... I'm not planning on those comments to stop for a while. I guess I should love my feet and how unique they are and how I'm one of the only few female adults that have such small feet like I do. But I don't love it, and it's okay. I realize Heavenly Father just gave me what he could give me as left overs from the previous kids that were born before me in my family. And I'm glad I got anything at all! I just want to give a shout out to the other handful of girls that have the same issue as me. Whether or not they're itty-bitty feet or feet the size of boats- you probably know how I feel. So that's all that matters to me!

*First picture of Ryan and my feet together as a visual aid

**disclaimer: the Belle shoe does look too small to fit on my feet, but I bet I could find them in my size if I REALLY looked...

Update: I just found this website for those of you that struggle with the same thing as me. They're on the pricey side, but to me it's worth it to have an adult pair of shoes!

Happy Mom's Day

So, I promised I would write a diddy about my mommy-not just because I did about my dad, but because I don't think I tell her often enough how much she means to me and how grateful I am to have her in my life! She really is an inspiration to me and has been to so many others. I am going to do bullet points because I feel that I sort out my feelings better that way. (Not in any particular order...)
Nola Dorothea Matthews Collier

  • She is one of the most beautiful women in the world. She has the sweetest most gentle and contagious smile. She is graceful and as my dad would say, FOXY!
  • She will always be honest with you, even if you don't expect it!
  • She has the most beautiful singing voice in the world. I miss hearing it as much as I used to when I was a kid. She'd sing in Sacrament meetings frequently. Our little friends used to come to us and tell us they wanted a CD of her singing. I'd love it when she'd sing "O, Divine Redeemer" with my sister Delinda accompanying it. And especially when my brother Greg would sing it with her. So beautiful.
  • When I was little, I used to love laying on her tummy and loved hearing it make noises. It was the most comfortable place for me to be. Especially when she'd stroke my brow and play with my hair. I remember her telling me she wanted to lose weight once and being so distraught that I'd have no where to rest anymore! (I still to this day like my brow to be stroked though, "'Troke Mama"!)
  • You cheeky little thing you!
  • Her stories from South Africa as a child and what it was like for her there and back then -it seemed like a fairy tale to me. I still love to hear them over and over.
  • She listens when you have something to get off your chest and always offers profound advise. It's not always what I'm ready to hear- but 85% of the time it's applicable!
  • She has a love of history and books and loves to learn.
  • She has a wonderful and strong testimony of the Gospel, and has Faith enough for all of us. She loves the Lord and knows that he will always watch over her as long as she's doing her part.
  • She's always been such a good teacher, not only to her children- but to her voice and piano students. There have been countless times I'd hear a student come to the house for a lesson and instead of music I'd her soft talking or laughing as my mom coached them in life and/or just listened to them. Her students always loved and admired her and looked up to her. Most of them still keep in touch with her because of the profound affect she's had on their lives.
  • She has a good, good heart and wants the best for all.
  • I love her laugh, especially when she gets going really good and you can't stop her! Her little nose and eyes scrunch up and her face turns red and it's so cute!
  • She loves all of her 6 children SO much. She is always so interested in what's going on in our lives and wants to know how to help us make it even better.
  • She is SO talented musically. She can sing your pants off, has a song for everything, and can teach a tone-deaf teenager to sing like a bird!
  • Is a wonderful cook and has taught me lots about it all. I hope I can be as good a cook as she is someday!
  • Has a wonderful sense of humor and knows how to make you smile and laugh.
  • I am so glad that she got to be here for my wedding and to see me get married. It was the most wonderful thing to have my family here that could come to see me and my love get married, and one thing I will always remember is her helping me get ready before hand. My bouquet had lace from her wedding dress wrapped around where I held it. That was an extra special touch! I loved it!
  • She's a wonderful Grandma and loves her grandchildren oh so much! I can't wait for her to know my little kiddies and to love them and cuddle them and to sing them to sleep!
  • Another favorite memory: singing "Go To Sleep My Baby" to me... I will keep that going mom! My kids will know and love that song too!
  • If you're a guy, and you know my mom, don't worry if she calls you "ugly thing". That means she likes you. If she doesn't call you that... well, I don't know what to tell you. Maybe that means she only kind of likes you! he, he!
  • She has taught me so much; good values, good principles, manners (in certain situations), gracefulness, and dignity...always dignity!
  • I think my mom has always worried about being an older mom to me since she had me when she was 42, but it's never even crossed my mind as something that's bothered me. I remember a teacher's aide at school saying "Oh look, you're grandma is here to pick you up" one time in elementary school when really it was my mom- but I am proud to have an older mom. We keep each other going!

I love my mom a lot. I am such a lucky girl to have parents that love me and my siblings, each other and the Lord all so very much. I could go on and on... in fact, I'll probably remember something else to go on the list even after this is published- but I hope you and she will get the picture! I am such a fortunate and blessed woman to have the people in my life that I do. Especially my parents who have been amazing examples to me. I want to be a good wife, mother, friend and daughter because of my mom. I want to be as supportive of my husband as my mom is of my dad. I want to be a good mommy and love my kids and teach them as much as my mom has. I want to be a strong minded and happy woman like my mom is. I want to keep the spice of life in my bones for as long as my mom has! Happy Mother's Day Momma and to all of you who are mothers too! (And to those who aren't quite mother's yet but want to be and will be someday!)
